Why adults seek an assessment
Many autistic and ADHD adults aren’t identified as children. Some have spent years masking, or have been given other explanations that never quite fitted. Others start wondering after a child or family member is assessed, or after reading about other people’s experiences.
An assessment can be a way to make sense of your history and the way you experience the world. It isn’t about fixing who you are.
- Feeling out of step with others for as long as you can remember
- Being exhausted by masking at work, socially or at home
- Struggling with focus, organisation or time in ways that effort alone doesn’t change
- Sensory experiences, shutdowns or burnout that others don’t seem to share
- Wanting information that may help when discussing supports at work or study

What to expect
How an adult assessment works
- Your history
- Adult assessments look back as well as at now. With your consent, it can help to hear from someone who knew you as a child, such as a parent or sibling. If that isn’t possible, that’s okay. We’ll work with what’s available, such as old school reports.
- Adapted to you
- We explain each step in plain language. You can ask for breaks, written information or other adjustments, and you’re welcome to ask about having a support person with you.
- Where
- Assessments can involve telehealth and outreach appointments across Melbourne. Some measures work best in person, so we’ll discuss the format that suits your assessment when you enquire.
- Feedback and report
- A feedback session to go through the findings together, and a written report with recommendations. What an assessment usually includes.

Things worth knowing
Medicare
Medicare rebates generally aren’t available for adult autism or ADHD assessments with a psychologist. More about Medicare and assessments.
ADHD and medication
A psychologist can assess for and diagnose ADHD, but can’t prescribe. If medication is something you’d like to consider, read psychologist or psychiatrist for ADHD? before you book, so you can choose the pathway that suits you.
After an assessment
Some people find the findings are enough on their own. Others want support to make sense of them, adjust routines or talk about what they need at work. Therapy is available if that would help.
